o 2. Independent Nouns Used as Suffixes

Many German suffixes were once independent words. Through frequent use their original sense has been lost. This process is still active today with words like Gut, Werk, Wesen, and Zeug, to name a few examples. As nouns they have their own meanings, but when attached to other substantives, they act as collective suffixes indicating the notion of belonging to a group of individuals or objects, or expressing other collective ideas.
